HARLAND L. ROBINSON
PORT CHARLOTTE, FL……Harland L. “Harley” Robinson, 85, of Port Charlotte FL, formerly of Vassalboro passed away on Sunday, October 8, 2017 at Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte FL.
Harland was born on December 12, 1931 in Rockport and was the son of the late Louis A. Robinson and R. Hazel Collins Robinson.
Harland started his working career selling insurance, but realized he wasn’t happy and finally found a job that centered on the safety of others. Harland became the Highway Safety Coordinator for the State of Maine and was responsible for passing laws regarding safety belt usage, wearing helmets and child safety seats, naming just a few. He helped write the motorcycle registration manual. In addition, he was also responsible for school bus safety and planned the school bus rodeos which still take place.
Harland was also an EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) for County Ambulance, now known as Delta out of Augusta. He worked many years at the Augusta Civic Center during the high school basketball tournaments.
Harland enjoyed having fun. One of his many favorite activities was music. An extremely talented musician who played the trumpet, saxophone, piano, guitar and accordion, he liked to play, sing and write his own music. Harland was part of a jazz band that would play in NYC. He was known for his beautiful bass singing voice and it was a pleasure listening to him sing at church and at home.
When Harley wasn’t passing motorcycle laws, he was riding his motorcycle. It didn’t matter if it was his Harley Hog or his scooter; he just loved to ride, but always with his leather jacket and helmet!
He was a member of the Grange and worked his way up to Deputy and Master.
An avid sports fan who loved the Boston Celtics, Harley always tried to attend soccer or basketball games of his children. His other favorite pastime activities included gardening, fishing and camping or any brain games like chess.
Harland is survived by wife Mary; his daughters, Gina Prince and her partner Ron Ellis, of Sarasota FL; Jacquelyn E. Locke and her husband Craig, of Sidney; his son, Stacy H. Robinson and his wife Michele, of Hermon; his granddaughters, Heather E. Frauen and her husband, Larry of Hillsborough NC, Jennessa Frost and her husband, Douglas, of Lake George NY; Toviah Prince and her partner, Michael Hoffman, of Sarasota FL; and his grandsons, Hunter J. Clukey of Hermon; Aaron Prince and his partner, Angie Roux of Naples; Noah Prince of Long Beach CA; Joshua Ligiecki of Glens Fall NY; and Josiah Ligiecki of Asheville NC. He was pre-deceased by his parents Louis and Hazel; brothers, Andrew C., Floyd O., Louis W. Robinson and Robert Ingersoll; sisters, Shirley Drinkwater and Theresa Edgecomb; and his first, Lorraine D. Robinson, the mother of his children, Jacki and Stacy.
Services were held at the Long Funeral Home in Camden on Friday, October 20, 2017 followed by burial in the Mountain View Cemetery. A ‘Celebration of Life’ will be held at the Methodist Church in Port Charlotte on Friday, October 27, 2017.
