Obituary for Douglas Malcolm Urquhart

DOUGLAS M. URQUHART

CAMDEN………………Douglas Malcolm Urquhart, 79, of Camden, died Sunday, March 13, 2011 at Knox Center For Long Term Care in Rockland surrounded by his family. Born in Newcastle on June 27, 1931, he was the son of Daniel Malcolm and Annie Belle (Hagan) Urquhart and was a graduate of Morse High School, Class of 1949 in Bath. After high school, he worked as an usher in the local movie theater when movie tickets cost 5 cents. From 1949 to 1953, he served in the U.S. Army. Following military discharge, Doug went to work in Washington, DC. He then moved to Camden where he worked as a typesetter for the Camden Herald for several years. Doug worked for many years for the U.S. Postal Service until he retired. While for the U.S. Postal Service, he served as temporary post master in Topsham, and at the Camden Post Office he served as a desk clerk and a postal carrier.

Doug was a former member of the American Legion Post in Camden where he previously was an instructor for the drum and bugle corps from 1956 to 1958. He was a current member of the Winslow-Holbrook Merritt American Legion Post #1 in Rockland. For the past 45 years, Doug has been an active member of the Rockland Lodge of Elks #1008 where he held many offices including secretary, Exalted Ruler, and was a Past District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler. He enjoyed running Bingo and attending events at the Elks Club. Doug enjoyed his many, many friends and acquaintances and will be remembered for his great sense of humor.

The family would like to acknowledge the many caregivers at the Anderson Inn and Knox Center For Long Term Care who compassionately cared for him.

Surviving are his three children, Ken Urquhart and his wife, Norma of Puyallup, WA; Dee Urquhart and her companion, Christopher Curtis of Camden; Barbie Urquhart and her companion, Bill Woodard of Sangerville; stepchildren, Paula Moody and her husband, Dave of Glen Cove; Carrie Walden and her husband, Robert of Warren; Robert Gaudette and his wife, Esther of Burketville; and Lillian Gaudette of Camden; a sister, Barbara Boyland-Hatch of Bath; thirteen grandchildren, Urissa, Elysha, Lynsey, Dylan, Zachary, Meghan, Nicole, Kate, Brian, Melissa, Sam, Shawn, and Sarah; and six great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held 2PM, Thursday, March 17, 2011 at the Rockland Lodge of Elks, 210 Rankin Street, Rockland. Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family at the Maine Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Augusta.
