I only met Bob in his last years in Camden when I was walking "the loop" with my dog Bess. Bob and his litlte dog Heidi? would often be out to say Hello. Occasionally he would invite us in for a chat and gradually we became friends. One day he greeted me with an envelope containing a copy of the Certificate signed by Admiral Byrd that he had been given when he visited Antarctica.
After Marge died Bob had no interest in the holidays. As Christmas approached, I cut a small tree which I managed to attach to the board that held his mailbox and then decorate with a few ornaments. As word spread of Bob's loneliness others secretly added items including small ornaments crocheted by a lady from Rockland who passed his drive every day en route to her work. Bob never knew who any of his Christmas Elves were. Our identity was not important. That we cared about him was all that mattered.
Then came Halloween. With a bit of coaching and encouragement, Bob agreed to have a bit of candy on hand. When the neighborhood children arrived, he invited them into his home and to his dining room table which he had set with napkins and all sorts of sweet treats for the children who were thrilled that they had visited Mr. Knight. It was the highlight of their holiday.
I am so enriched by having met Bob Knight. My thoughts are with his family.
