Obituary for Philip Montgomery
PHILIP H. MONTGOMERY
CAMDEN……………………….Philip H. Montgomery, 85, of Camden, died July 29, 2018 at Quarry Hill. Phil had a playful spirit and a unique ability to spread happiness connecting with others through his warmth and memorable exclamations like “that’s the pepper” or his famous expression of delight – a yodel.
He was born in Englewood, New Jersey, son of Jay Hugh Montgomery and Helen G. Montgomery. He spent his childhood in Camden, Maine and attended Hebron Academy where he graduated in 1952. In 1956 he received his Bachelor of Arts degree and U.S. Army officer commission from Middlebury College. After graduation from college he worked for a short time at an investment company on Wall Street and then served with the U.S. Army at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and later taught school at Hebron Academy.
Phil married Alison Norton on August 29, 1959, and after a brief time in Boston, the couple moved to Cape Elizabeth, where they built a home and lived for 33 years while Phil worked in Portland. By the early 70’s, they also built a camp at Sugarloaf Mt., where their family spent weekends and vacations entrenched in the freestyle skiing community. Phil worked as an investment advisor and stockbroker for 25 years, branch manager of a national brokerage firm’s branch office and spent a few years in banking administration in Portland. In 1995, he and Alison moved to Camden to retire.
Phil was a volunteer with the United Way, was South Portland’s Meeting House Hill Congregational Church senior deacon, board member of the Portland Community Concert Association, board member of the Camden Ragged Mountain Recreational Area Foundation, Chairman of the USSA Eastern Freestyle Committee, and touched the lives of many working closely for over 30 years with recovering alcoholics. He recently celebrated his 39th anniversary of sobriety in AA. He was a member of the First Congregational Church UCC in Camden.
Over the years, Phil enjoyed sailing on Penobscot Bay and skiing with the family at Sugarloaf Mountain. Later in life, he preferred warmer weather in Tucson, Arizona, and enjoyed their winter home there. Visiting with his children was a top priority both in Rangeley, and on Bainbridge Island, Washington.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Alison N. Montgomery of Camden; a daughter, Janet Welch and her husband Robert Welch of Rangeley, Maine; a son, Hugh Montgomery, his wife Marcia Babcock Montgomery; granddaughters Page Montgomery and Eliza Montgomery all of Bainbridge Island, WA; grandson William Welch and his wife, Cara Marsilio, great-grandson, Benjamin Welch, all of Westwood, MA; sister-in-law, Ann Montgomery, and nieces, Lee Montgomery and Holly Rutland of Lincolnville. Phil is predeceased by his brother, David H. Montgomery and niece, Sara Montgomery.
In lieu of flowers, friends may make donations to the Ragged Mountain Recreation Area Foundation, P.O. Box 438, Camden, ME 04843, Penobscot Bay YMCA or Camden Public Library.
A Memorial Service followed by a reception, will be held at 1PM, Wednesday, August 15, 2018 at the First Congregational Church UCC, 55 Elm Street, Camden, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Deb Jenks. Private interment will be in the Mountain View Cemetery, Camden. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.longfuneralhomecamden.com.
