Obituary for Maurice Joseph Leonard
MAURICE J. LEONARD
ALSTEAD, NH……………..Maurice J. “Moe” Leonard, age 85, of Alstead, NH, died peacefully Sunday morning, June 17, 2018, at his niece’s home in Alstead, NH.
Moe was born on July 22, 1932 in Camden, and was the son of Chester and Lillian [Greenlaw] Leonard. A 1951 graduate of Camden High School, he was an exceptional baseball player in his youth. In December of 1952, Moe enlisted in the U.S Army serving his country in Korea. He was decorated with the Korean Service Medal, a Bronze Service Star, the United Nations Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. He was honorably discharged in October of 1954 and was very proud of his service.
After returning from his military service in Korea, he moved to Meriden, CT. He married Linda Stubbs and the couple had three children together. For 30 years, Moe worked at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft before retiring. He eventually moved to live with his sister, Sena, in Meriden for about 6 years, before moving to Charlestown, NH, where they lived for 9 years until she passed away.
For the last nine years, Moe lived with his niece, MaryAnn (LaChapelle) McLellan, her two children, Jaqi and Danny, and her husband, Erich McLellan, in Alstead, NH. Moe attended the local Community Meals Program, “Friendly Meals” for lunch whenever possible. He enjoyed the socializing as well as the home cooked meals and was fond of many of the staff and patrons. Whenever he was unable to get out of the house, a very special volunteer, Marie, would deliver his meal and spend some time visiting.
Moe enjoyed watching most sports, was an avid follower of baseball, and could answer any baseball trivia question. He knew every statistic of each team, enjoyed watching MLB on television, sometimes telling the umpire and players (out loud) what he thought.
Moe loved to learn anything new and enjoyed doing word search puzzles for hours on end. When he did not know the meaning of a word, he would type it into his handheld electronic dictionary, write the word in a spiral notebook, and then he would share with anyone close by. He was also interested in learning about the 50 states as well as other countries around the world.
His family and friends will always remember him as a kind, gentle, and funny man. He made so many people laugh, just because he was Moe.

Every doctor, nurse, assistant, technician and volunteer was of great help and comfort. Thank you to Hospice and Home Health Services in Keene, NH for helping to care for Moe at home and for every minute of support; the Stringer Funeral Home in Claremont, NH and the Long Funeral Home in Camden.
Moe is survived by his sons, Ronald and Donald Leonard of Connecticut; several grandchildren; his sister, Bebe Goodwin of Camden; his half-sister, Mary Bruce of Clayton, NC; sister-in-law, Nancy Leonard of Searsmont; nieces and nephews: MaryAnn McLellan, and her husband Erich, of Alstead, NH; Jill Goodwin of Belfast; Jan Warren and her husband, Peter, of Camden; Shelley Haslett of Manchester, CT; Mance Leonard and his wife, Tamryn, of Agawam, MA; Richelle Gagne and her husband, Randy, of Searsmont; Sheldon Leonard of Jefferson; and Chad Leonard of Washington, DC; and several grand nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents and stepmother, Mary Leonard; his wife, Linda [Stubbs] Leonard; his son, David Leonard; his sisters; Frances Schwartz and Sena Leonard, his brother; C. Richard “Dick” Leonard, and his brothers-in-law, “Sonny” Goodwin and Edward Schwartz.
