Obituary for Bobbie Gordon Guhl
BOBBIE G. GUHL
CAMDEN……………Bobbie G. Guhl, age 90, passed away quietly on February 3rd, 2018 at Quarry Hill Gardens in Camden. Born October 26, 1927 in Plymouth, Wisconsin to Charles and Marie (Bohanyin) Guhl, he was the youngest of five children. Bobbie, or Bob, dedicated his adult life to a career in the military. Enlisting in the Navy at age 17, Bob was stationed aboard a ship on the Yangtze River in China during World War II. He delighted in retelling humorous tales of shipboard life, as well as the numerous adventures he experienced during his land based duties. After separating from the Navy at the end of the war, he moved to California for a short hiatus before returning to the service, this time enlisting in the United States Army. His first assignment sent him to post-war Europe where, in Frankfurt, Germany, he met and married then Corporal Lillian M. Scholz, his wife of 43 years,. During his career with the Army, first in the infantry, then the Army Security Agency, tours of duty took Bob and family around the world with multiple assignments to Europe, posts in the United States, and the Pacific. He also served two tours of duty in Korea - first during, then after the war, and another in Vietnam. After 26 years, he retired from the Army as a Command Sergeant Major in 1974, and went on to earn his Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of Washington. Bob would spend the next twelve years working for the United States Postal Service and developing his “gentleman’s farm” in Eatonville, WA with his wife. After her passing, he retired again and moved to Maine in 1995 to be closer to his daughter and his youngest son. Once retired, Bob followed a number of interests including collecting and restoring antique firearms, traveling with his two dogs to family events in Wisconsin, and reconnecting with family. He was actively involved in local organizations including the VA, VFW, Knights of Columbus, and served on Camden’s Budget Committee. A generous and loving man, he had a great sense of humor and never hesitated to help anyone – dog or human – in need. Bob was predeceased by his wife Lillian, and his four siblings. He is survived by his son Gordon, wife Paula, and grandson Jeffrey of Lynnwood, Washington, daughter Susan (Scholz) Blake, husband Peter, and “grandson” Poncho (the dog), of Camden Maine, and son Mark and wife Elaine of Buxton Maine.
At his request, there will be no service. Interment will be at the National Veteran’s Cemetery in Bourne, Massachusetts at the convenience of the family. If desired, memorial gifts may be made in his name to your local animal shelter.
The family would like to gratefully acknowledge the love, caring, and support of the staff at Quarry Hill Gardens during Dad’s stay. He would have liked to thank you all himself – he loved you as much as you loved him, and we sincerely appreciate all you’ve done.
