Obituary for Lawrence Cunningham

SEARSMONT — Lawrence R. Cunningham, 71, of Searsmont, died unexpectedly at his home Sept. 30, 2017, exactly as he would have wanted it.
Born June 6, 1946 in Boston, Mass., he was the son of Thomas and Geraldine Cunningham.
After earning a bachelor’s of arts degree at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, he then received a master’s of arts in history from Dartmouth College, in New Hampshire.
Larry retired to Maine in 2008 after many years of teaching at Hampton Roads Academy in Newport News, Virginia.
He quietly settled into his new life in Searsmont with much contentment, volunteering at the Searsmont Town Library and joining and serving on the Searsmont Historical Society.
He looked forward each year to staffing Grandma’s Attic, part of the annual fundraiser for the Searsmont Town Library.
He is sadly missed by his sister, Jan Cunningham, of Camden, and their cousin, Andrew Dervan and his wife, Linda, of Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan; numerous colleagues and former students from Hampton Roads Academy, and friends and neighbors in Searsmont.
In keeping with his wishes, there will be no funeral service, but there will be a gathering in his honor Nov. 11 at noon at the Community Center in Searsmont.
