FRED M. GARDNER
ISLESBORO……………..Fred Marvin Gardner, 95, of Islesboro, ME died on Tuesday, October 31, 2017 at the Sussman House in Rockport. Born in Kansas City, Kansas on July 4, 1922, he was the son of Jess and Julia M. (Henry) Gardner.
He received his PhD from Notre Dame University in Physics in 1962. He worked for United Technologies in East Hartford, CT and from 1970 was a Professor in the Physics Department at the University of Hartford until his retirement in 1989.
He lived in Glastonbury, CT from 1965 until 2004 when he moved to Durham, NH. He spent his summers on Islesboro from the time of his marriage in 1963. One of his happy achievements was building the family’s summer house on Islesboro in 1978.
He was a prolific woodworker who designed and crafted fine furniture and turned many bowls and platters from unique pieces of wood. He loved spending time in his workshop.
Surviving is his wife of 53 years, Judith Warren Gardner of Islesboro; five children, Mary Ruffin and her husband Larry of Orlando, FL; Warren Gardner and his wife Rupesh of Manhattan, NY; Charles Gardner and his wife, Pu of Madison, AL; Kevin Gardner and his wife Sheila of Durham, NH; Eric Gardner and his wife, Jane of Melrose, MA; five brothers, Walter Gardner, Robert Gardner, Leo Gardner, James Gardner, and Joseph Gardner, and eleven grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Henry and John.
A funeral mass followed by a reception will be held at 10AM, Friday, November 10, 2017 at Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church, 11 Union Street, Camden with the Rev. Robert Vaillancourt officiating. The graveside service will be held at 11AM, Saturday, November 11, 2017 in Maple Grove Cemetery, Islesboro. If desired, memorial gifts may be made to Boardman Cottage, 151 Main Rd., Islesboro, ME 04848.
