Obituary for William Carl Clement

WILLIAM C. CLEMENT
CAMDEN……………..William Carl Clement, 63, died on Saturday, March 26, 2016 at Pen Bay Medical Center after a recent fall. Born in Camden, he was the son of Carl M. and S. Frances (Jones) Clement. As a young boy, Bill worked delivering the daily newspaper throughout Camden. A graduate of Camden-Rockport High School, Class of 1970, he was a talented basketball player who held several school records. He also attended Ricker College in Houlton and played basketball there for Coach Skip Pound.
On May 23, 1981, he married Julie Karl from Rockland at the Rockland Congregational Church.
Bill’s employment included Bryant’s Sunoco Station, landscape foreman for Jackson Landscaping, electrician’s apprentice for Peasley Electric, electronic installer at Harbor Audio Video, caretaker, and at Long Funeral Home as a funeral attendant and gardener. His landscaping talents will live on in several stone walls and beautiful gardens in Rockport, Camden, and Belfast.
From 1974 to 1986, he was a member of the Camden Fire Department Atlantic Engine Company. In 1977, Bill joined the Western Maine Board of Basketball Officials (IABBO) and later the Eastern Maine Board officiating elementary, middle school, and high school games until 2014. He also volunteered his time and talents with youth players promoting good sportsmanship and making sure they understood the rules of the game.
Along with being an avid New England Patriot’s and Boston Red Sox fan, Bill also loved splitting and stacking firewood. His love of the outdoors extended during the summer months to swimming and having campfires at the cottage on Washington Pond with family and friends.
Bill coached adult women’s softball for many years winning several state and regional championships. He also coached youth girls’ basketball. March was his favorite time of year, when he followed March Madness and the NCAA college teams praying that his favorite team, the Duke Blue Devils, would make it to the Final Four.
Competitive in every way, Bill grew to love field hockey through his daughter and looked forward to following each season of the Camden Hills teams under the direction of Lindsey.
Bill was a lifelong member, former Sunday school teacher, and trustee of Chestnut Street Baptist Church, where he loved singing in the choir and welcoming new visitors each Sunday. His joy of music was greatly influenced by his sister Sybil’s piano playing and his brother Phil’s guitar playing. In spite of his physical and cognitive difficulties from cancer and a stroke in 1990, he persevered finding his singing voice to share his love of Jesus.
His spiritual devotion and compassion for serving continued after being diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia.
Surviving is his wife, Julie Clement of Rockport; daughter Lindsey and her fiancé, Tyler Ludwig; sister, Sybil Wentworth and her husband, Joel, all of Union; brother, Philip Clement of Union; sister, Shirley Shannon and her husband, Walter of Newburgh; sister-in-law, Hye Kyong Clement of Fredericksburg, VA; and his two canine companions, Maggie and Bailey; and many nieces and nephews.
