Camden’s oldest Citizen MABELLE VERNETTE CROSS ROBARTS CAMDEN……(Mabelle)Vernette Robarts passed away at her home March 10, 2016; she was 102. Vernette was the current holder of Camden’s Boston Post Cane presented to her in July 2014 as Camden’s oldest citizen. Born in Camden on May 14, 1913, she was the daughter of Jesse F. and Mabelle L. (Mank) Cross. She lived in Camden nearly all her life, the past 72 in the house she and her husband built in 1944. Vernette attended Camden and Rockland schools and The Ballard Business School in Rockport. In 1936, she married Myron F. Robarts who predeceased her at age 100 after 66 years of marriage. For many years she was the secretary/bookkeeper for Robarts Tree & Landscape Service and she and Myron owned and operated Baymount Cottages, summer rentals on Penobscot Bay in Camden. She also worked as a seamstress at Knox County General Hospital in Rockland sewing hospital and baby gowns before her retirement. Vernette was an active member of Extension, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Camden Dandelions (the wives of the Lion’s Club Members in those days). She and Myron enjoyed many years of fishing & camping in Maine and in later years, spent winters in Florida. Vernette was predeceased by her husband, Myron R. Robarts, Sr. and her son, Myron F. Robarts, Jr., and grandson, Kerry J. Parker who died in August 2015. Surviving are two daughters, Constance L. Robarts Parker, Diann D. Robarts Henderson, both of Camden; four grandsons, Keith L. Parker, Kent R. Parker, Kim R. Parker, and Aaron J. Henderson, all living in Maine; one granddaughter, Julia A. Henderson Gibson of Seattle,WA; eight great-grandsons, Andrew Parker, Jason Parker, Jeffrey Parker, Austin and Bradon Parker, Ian and Julian Henderson and Zane Gibson; five great granddaughters: Melissa Parker, Samantha Parker, Brandi Parker Faneros, Katherine Hopkins and Meghan Hopkins; one great-great grandson,Trae Faneros; four great-great granddaughters, Kaylee Parker, Abigail Faron-Parker, Kylee Faneros and Brooklyn Hopkins. A memorial service will be held at 2PM, Sunday, April 17, 2016 at the United Christian Church in Lincolnville with the Rev. Dr. Susan Stonestreet officiating, followed by a reception at her daughter’s home in Camden. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to PAWS in Camden. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Camden and held at the convenience of the family. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.longfuneralhomecamden.com.
