Obituary for Marilyn Janville

Marilyn Janville
APPLETON…………Marilyn “Jan” Janville of Appleton, died Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at the age of 76. The daughter of Harold J. Janville and Elizabeth Walker Janville, she was born in Goshen, New York, in the Hudson Valley. Jan was a graduate of the University of New Hampshire, receiving a BS degree with a major in Occupational Therapy.
Jan married Roger S. Teachout, an Air Force officer who served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. They, along with their two young sons, were stationed in Taipei, Taiwan for three years. Living off-base, Jan developed her on-going interest in Chinese culture and language, leading her to study Mandarin for many years. When the family returned to the states, they settled in a 150 year-old home in Hallowell. Their marriage ended in divorce.
As an occupational therapist, Jan worked in the public schools with children in the Augusta and later in the Camden-Rockport area systems. Over the years, she continued to renew her skills as research in her field advanced.
Jan was an artist at heart, working in ceramics, printmaking, assemblage, and drawing. Her work is included in the current Senior College show at the Hutchinson Center. She loved to sing and was a member of the Down East Singers for many years. Performing the Carmina Burana was her absolute favorite.
Jan was a world traveler, spending time in China, Taiwan, France, Spain, Italy, and Cuba, before it was kosher to travel there. Of all the places she traveled, Indian Point in Georgetown, Maine was the one dearest to her. She vacationed there with her young family for many seasons and returned with her adult children and grandchildren in later years. She valued the time spent there with her family, enjoying Indian Point’s rare beauty.
Most of all, Jan loved nature. She adored being outdoors in all seasons and enjoyed hiking, swimming, kayaking, and cross country skiing. In early motherhood she delighted in taking daily walks with the family’s beloved collie, Maffie, who returned with them from Taiwan. She loved growing organic berries, herbs, fruits and vegetables and took great pride in sharing them with friends and family.
Jan is survived by her son Roger Teachout, and his wife, Donna Saxby of Scarborough, their children Spencer, Sienna and Serena, her son Jaime Teachout and his wife Paula of New Orleans, their children Hailey and Sage, and her sister Donna Janville and her husband, John Gillespie and their son Jesse Gillespie.
A celebration of Jan’s life will be held Sunday, July 5th at 3PM at the Appleton Meetinghouse, Appleton, Maine. If desired, memorial gifts may be made to the The Appleton Meetinghouse Restoration Fund, c/o President, Appleton Historical Society, 2916 Sennebec Road, Appleton, ME 04862. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.longfuneralhomecamden.com. Arrangements are with Long Funeral Home in Camden.
