Obituary for Patricia Duncan

PATRICIA S. DUNCAN
CAMDEN………………Patricia S. Duncan, 86, of Camden, died on Tuesday, October 30, 2018 at the Sussman House in Rockport surrounded by her family. Born in Vinalhaven on October 1, 1932, she was the daughter and youngest child of Gosta and Lucy (Swears) Skoog. Pat was a graduate of Vinalhaven (Lincoln) High School and attended Peter Bent Brigham School of Nursing in Boston. In her later years she received a Associates Degree in Business from the University of Maine in Augusta.
On June 6, 1952, she married David Duncan, Jr. in Vinalhaven. They raised three children, Wendy, Barbara and David III.
Once their children were in school, Pat became the Secretary/Bookkeeper for the Superintendent of Schools in Vinalhaven
In 1975, Pat and her husband Dave moved to Camden. She accepted the position of Business Manager for MSAD # 28 and performed the same services for Hope and Appleton. She remained in this position for over 21 years and was known state wide for her understanding of and expertise in School business and finance. Pat was a resource on the subject for many throughout the State, she was respected and well liked and developed lasting friendships through her work.
Thursdays were a good day for staff to stop by the Superintendents office for “advice” because that was the day she brought home baked goods to the office to share.
In 1992 the Duncan’s built their “dream home” in Rockport where they lived for 17 years. In 2009, the Duncan’s moved to their new retirement home in Camden close to their daughter Wendy and her husband, Richard Crossman.
A long-time member of the Union Church in Vinalhaven and John Street United Methodist Church in Camden, Pat was also a member of the Ocean View Chapter #201 Order of the Eastern Star and Camden Rotary Club where she served as its President in 2001 – 2002. In 2003 she was the recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship award given annually the Rotary Club. Pat loved being a Rotarian and enjoyed the service and friendships developed there. For many years she served as the chair of the Rotary Scholarship Committee and loved her interaction with the students and the awarding of the scholarships at graduation. Pat also served in the same capacity for the Rockport Garden Club.
Pat served on several boards, the last being the Board of the Penobscot Bay YMCA.
She was an avid gardener, a seamstress, and an excellent cook. She enjoyed entertaining where her cooking skills were on display, this was especially true at the Duncan’s home during the Christmas season.
Pat had many interests, she and Dave loved to travel and did so extensively though out the U.S., Canada They owned several campers and had many adventures enjoying the outdoors (in comfort!) During the camping trips Dave would take over the shopping and cooking giving Pat a well deserved break.
Traveling abroad was another passion, she and Dave enjoyed trips to England, Scotland, Turkey, Greece and Italy with their daughter Wendy. Later in life she had traveling adventures with friends to Europe, the Caribbean and the Panama Canal.
Pat was predeceased by her husband, David in 2010, her son, David Duncan III, brother, Dennis R. Skoog, sisters in law, Edith Skoog and Ruth Skoog. She is survived by her two daughters, Wendy D. Crossman and her husband, Richard of Camden; and daughter, Barbara Meadows of Washington; brother, Leonard A. Skoog of Vinalhaven; four grandchildren, Duncan Patrick Crossman of Brighton, MA; Anna M. Crossman of Camden; David Carter and Bethany Carter both of Washington; and great-grandchildren, Jackson, Carter, and Eliza Chontos, and Cole Carter.
