Obituary for Theodore Lyman "Ted" Clapp

Theodore Lyman "Ted"  Clapp
CAMDEN………………Rev. Theodore “Ted” Lyman Clapp, 99, passed away peacefully at Quarry Hill in Camden on Sunday, August 19, 2018. Born on May 15, 1919 in Northampton, MA, he was the son of Richard and Ellen (Lyman) Clapp. Ted grew up in New Haven, CT, graduating from New Haven High School in 1936, and as post-graduate from Hopkins Grammar School in 1937. In 1941, Ted graduated from Colgate University where he was president of the Senior Honor Society, treasurer of his class, played on the varsity soccer team, was captain of the fencing team, a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity, and was appointed to “Who’s Who in American Universities and Colleges”.
In 1943, Ted married Eleanor Young and received his B.D. degree from Yale Divinity School in 1944. He then served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1947 as a chaplain aboard transport ships sailing to and from France and Japan. From 1947 until 1951, he served as minister of the Congregational Church in Goffstown, NH, and from 1951 until 1954, at the Old South Church in Boston. Rev. Clapp received his Ed.M. graduate degree from Harvard University in 1955 and the CASG in 1960. He was employed as a guidance counselor in the Newton, Massachusetts schools and then as school psychologist in the Wellesley school system until 1978. Ted and Eleanor moved from Wellesley to Waldoboro in 1978. While in Waldoboro, Ted served as president of the Waldoboro Library board. In 1988, they moved to Damariscotta where Ted served on the Town Budget Committee for several years and was president of the Skidompha Library Board. In 2016, Ted moved to Anderson Inn at Quarry Hill in Camden where he enjoyed attending the First Congregational Church UCC.
Predeceased by his wife, Eleanor Clapp who died in 1998, and son, David Clapp in 2016, he is survived by two daughters, Susan Merrill and her husband, Richard of Brooksville; Elise Ferrell and her husband, Frank of Bath; and son, Lincoln Clapp and his wife, Melissa of Belfast; daughter-in-law, Carol of Riverton, New Zealand; eight grandsons, three granddaughters, and nine great-grandchildren, and his good friend and companion, Sylvia Martin of Camden. Ted was a positive thinker and idealist. His goal in life was to appreciate the lives of others and to continually encourage them. A memorial service followed by a reception, will be held at 4PM, Friday, September 7, 2018 at the Second Congregational Church, 51 Main Street, Newcastle. If desired, memorial gifts may be made to the Shield’s Mission Fund, c/o First Congregational Church UCC, 55 Elm Street, Camden.
